Without further ado, here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions about dental implants.
What are dental implants?
Dental implants are a permanent option to replace a missing tooth or teeth. Unlike dentures that sit atop the gumline, dental implants are embedded into the jaw bone, where the bone quickly fuses to the implant making it very stable. Implants consist of three parts: a titanium post called a fixture that is implanted into the jaw. These are completely below the gum and must have time to heal. Then, an abutment is attached to the fixture, and later a prosthesis (fake tooth) is attached to the abutment. This results in realistic-looking replacement teeth that sit flush against the gums.
Who qualifies for dental implants?
Most individuals are good candidates for dental implants. However, a person must be willing to commit to good dental hygiene and regular visits to the dentist’s office in order to avoid complications with implants. Heavy smokers or those with chronic illnesses might not be good candidates, but your dentist can evaluate you on an individual basis to determine if implants are right for you.
Does insurance cover implants?
Many insurance policies will not cover the full cost of a dental implant. Here at Lake Villa Dental, we try to do our best to offer affordable dental implants and will work with your financial situation to try and find ways to get you the treatments you need.
Are dental implants risky?
While it may seem like dental implants are a major or invasive procedure, they are incredibly routine for your dentist or oral surgeon. Dental implants have an overall success rate of about 98% and the success rate increases when proper care is taken. The biggest risks come from not following your dentist’s aftercare tips, which can lead to infections and further complications.
Do dental implants hurt?
Implants are a relatively pain-free procedure. Local anesthetic will be administered for the procedure so you won’t feel a thing. Afterward, most patients report some soreness that can be treated with over the counter pain relievers. If you happen to experience significant pain after your procedure, be sure to let your dental team know.
How do I care for dental implants?
Dental implants require pretty much the same type of care that your real teeth do. They need to be brushed at least twice a day, preferably in the morning and before bed. You should also floss your implants and rinse with a mouthwash. You also need to see your dentist for regular checkups twice a year or more frequently if instructed to do so.
Do I have to avoid certain foods with dental implants?
Immediately after your implants are placed into your jaw, you will want to stick to soft foods or follow the guidelines your dentist lays out. However, after the final pieces are placed and you get the green light from your dentist, you are free to eat all of the hard candy, caramel apples, and taffy you want — just be sure to brush away all that sticky sugar after!
How long do dental implants take to get?
Unfortunately, receiving dental implants requires multiple visits over the course of several months. This is because the jawbone must have time to heal after the titanium implant is placed before the subsequent pieces of the implant can be placed. We have options to ensure you are not walking around with missing teeth during the healing process, so be sure to ask your dentist about this during your free consultation.
Can I take out my dental implants?
No. Unlike dentures, implants are a permanent structure. You cannot take them out. Thankfully, though, with proper care implants can last a lifetime, making the need to remove them slim. If there does happen to be an issue and an implant must be removed, your dentist or oral surgeon will need to perform this task.
What are implant-supported dentures?
You will notice on our website that our Lake Villa dentist offers regular dental implants, implant-supported dentures, and mini dental implants. Implant-supported dentures differ from regular implants because the false teeth snap in and out of place, rather than being secured with an adhesive. For these replacement teeth, you still have the titanium posts implanted into your jaw as with regular implants, but the actual teeth aspect can be removed at night.
What are mini dental implants?
Mini implants use a smaller post than regular implants, meaning less bone structure is needed to securely anchor the implant into the jaw. Mini implants are a better option for people in poor health and requires less downtime, often being able to support replacement teeth in a matter of days rather than months.
